Roosters of the Sea of Cortez: Fly Fishing La Ventana

Roosters of the Sea of Cortez: Fly Fishing La Ventana

The adventure begins the moment you land in Cabo. After clearing customs, you hop in a van and make the scenic drive across the mountains of Baja. When you finally drop down into La Ventana and see the bright turquoise Sea of Cortez, it’s hard not to get excited.

We stayed in a beautiful private beach house right on the sand with its own pool. The setup was perfect, catered burrito breakfasts in the morning, fishing early before the heat set in, lunch back at the house, then relaxing by the pool in the afternoon. Every evening a private chef cooked an amazing dinner right there at the house.

But the fishing… that’s what made the trip unforgettable.

You’re on a panga, the guide chums the water, and suddenly massive roosterfish appear. These 20 to 30 pound tanks start patrolling right in front of the boat. The second your fly hits the water and starts moving, you watch them turn and charge. The eats are violent, and the fight on a 10 weight rod is absolutely brutal.

In four days I landed 14 roosterfish. The action was nonstop and some of the most visual fly fishing I’ve ever experienced.

The guides were excellent and the entire experience was incredibly well run.

Trips like this also remind you quickly how important the right gear setup can be. Having dependable travel bags, lightweight sun protection, and waterproof storage makes long days on the water far more enjoyable.

For this trip, a few pieces stood out:

If you’re looking for one of the most exciting sight fishing opportunities you can have with a fly rod, put La Ventana roosterfish at the top of your list.
