Chasing Permit in Ascension Bay
The trip to Palometa Club starts with a journey you won’t forget. After landing in Cancun, it’s a long van ride down a dusty jungle road, bouncing the whole way. Then the road disappears, you switch to a boat, and finish with a fast ride across Ascension Bay. When the lodge finally appears on the beach in Punta Allen, you know you’ve made it somewhere special.
I’ve now been three times with Speckled Trout Outfitters, always in late winter or early spring. That first trip still stands above the rest. Over five days of fishing I landed two permit, something most anglers only dream about, along with a small tarpon, a snook, and plenty of bonefish. It was one of those weeks where everything just clicked.
The next two trips were every bit as good. Our groups are always made up of folks from the mountains, people who share that same obsession with chasing fish on the fly in wild places. It always turns into a tight crew full of laughs, stories, and high-fives.
The guides are outstanding, the food is excellent, and the lodge is perfectly comfortable. But what keeps me coming back is the fishing itself. There’s nothing like spotting a fish, putting your fly in front of it, and watching it either charge or completely snub you. That moment of pure sight fishing is absolutely addictive.
If you love chasing fish on the flats with a fly rod, Palometa Club is hard to beat.
